FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything we get asked about buying, selling, sourcing, and shipping luxury watches, answered straight. Still stuck? Ask us directly.

Buying From Us

How a purchase actually works, start to finish.

01How do I actually buy a watch from you?+

You reach out, call, text, email, or the contact form, and tell us what you're after. We confirm availability, send photographs and a condition report of the specific watch, and give you a firm price. If it's right, we agree payment and the watch ships fully insured overnight.

There's no cart, no countdown timer, and no pressure. You'll have every detail in writing before you send a dollar.

02Why isn't there a "buy now" button on the site?+

Because a watch at this price deserves a conversation, not a checkout page. Anonymous checkout is also how people get burned in this industry, on both sides.

Talking first means you know exactly who you're dealing with, exactly which watch you're getting, and exactly what condition it's in before any money moves.

03Are the watches on your site your current inventory?+

No, the collections pages are catalogs of what we buy, sell, trade, and source, not a live stock list. Inventory in this business turns over daily, and a stale "in stock" list helps nobody.

For what is actually in hand right now, follow us on Instagram @big_sky_timepieces and open the Available Now highlight, we keep it current as watches come and go.

And ask about any reference you see here. We'll tell you straight whether it's in hand, available through our network, or genuinely hard to find right now. We'd rather tell you the truth than tell you what you want to hear.

04Can I see photos of the actual watch before I commit?+

Always. Every watch is photographed individually, and those are the photos you'll receive, no stock images, no retouching to hide wear.

Buy based on the pictures and description of your specific watch. If anything in them raises a question, ask, and we'll shoot more photos or get you on a video call with the watch in hand.

05Do you negotiate on price?+

We price fairly to begin with rather than padding a number so it can be talked down. That said, we're a person and not an algorithm, if you're buying more than one piece, trading something in, or paying by wire, tell us and we'll do what we can.

What we won't do is quote you a high number and hope you don't notice. You'll get the same price a friend of ours would get.

06Can I reserve a watch while I arrange payment?+

Yes. Watches are listed in more than one place, so a verbal "I'll take it" doesn't lock anything. A deposit, or confirmation that a wire has been sent, holds the piece for you.

If you need until Monday because your bank is closed, say so, we'll work with you. We just need something concrete so we're not turning away another buyer on a maybe.

07Can I buy in person?+

Yes, by appointment. We're based in Whitefish, Montana and are glad to meet local clients and travelers passing through.

Most of our business happens by phone and ships nationwide, so if you can't get to Montana, you're not at any disadvantage.

08Do you sell internationally?+

Case by case. International sales involve customs documentation, duties, and insurance limits that vary by country, so we look at each one individually before committing.

Contact us before you plan a purchase from outside the US and we'll tell you honestly whether we can do it well. If we can't ship somewhere safely and insured, we'll say so rather than take the risk with your money.

09I've never bought a watch this way before. How do I know it's safe?+

Fair question, and you should ask it of any dealer. Look at our sold watches, our Google reviews, our Chrono24 dealer profile, and our public posting history on Instagram. Ask for references and we'll give them.

Then read our Authenticity Guarantee and Returns policy they're written in plain English specifically so you don't have to take anything on faith.

10How fast do watches sell?+

Quickly. Desirable references often sell the same day they're listed, and many never make it to the website at all.

New arrivals go to Instagram @big_sky_timepieces first. If there's a specific reference you're waiting on, tell us and we'll come to you before it goes public.

Authenticity and Condition

What we verify, what we disclose, and what we guarantee.

01Are all of your watches authentic?+

Yes, 100%, every watch, without exception. Every timepiece we sell is guaranteed to be authentic and to be the exact reference, model, and configuration represented at the time of sale.

If a watch purchased from us is ever found not to be authentic as represented, we refund the full purchase price. That guarantee does not expire and has no fine print. See the full Authenticity Guarantee.

02How do you verify a watch is authentic?+

Before a watch is offered or shipped, we examine the case, bezel, crown, bracelet, and clasp for correct finishing, engraving, and factory-correct components; check the dial, hands, and markers against factory specification for that reference and production year; confirm the movement is correct for the reference; and record and verify serial and reference numbers against known production data.

We also test timekeeping and function, including chronograph, date, GMT, and other complications where fitted. Nothing ships on a hunch.

03What happens if a watch turns out not to be authentic?+

You get every dollar back. Contact us with your purchase details and the findings, we'll review the documentation, arrange return of the watch, and refund the full purchase price.

You don't need to open a dispute, hire anyone, or fight us for it. We'd rather eat a loss than have a bad watch out there with our name on it.

04Can I have the watch inspected by my own watchmaker?+

Please do. You're welcome to take any watch you buy from us to an independent watchmaker or an authorized service center.

Dealers who discourage independent inspection are telling you something. We encourage it, if an inspection ever turns up a legitimate authenticity issue, that's exactly what the guarantee is for.

05Are the photographs of the actual watch?+

Yes. Each watch is photographed individually and the images you receive are of the exact piece you're buying, unedited, and not touched up to hide marks.

Some brand pages on this site use manufacturer reference imagery to illustrate a model. Those are clearly for reference only; you will always see real photos of your actual watch before you commit.

06How do you describe condition?+

Plainly and completely. Authenticity is binary. A watch either is or it isn't. Condition isn't, so we describe it in detail: polishing, service history, aftermarket components, marks, and wear.

If a watch has been polished, we say so. If a part isn't factory-original, we say so. We would rather lose a sale than have you open the box and feel surprised.

07Has the watch been polished?+

We tell you, every time. Polishing removes metal and softens the factory edges and bevels, and for a collector that materially affects value, so it's not something we let you discover later.

If sharp, unpolished cases matter to you, say so up front and we'll only bring you pieces that meet that standard.

08Do you sell watches with aftermarket or customized parts?+

Occasionally, an aftermarket bezel, a non-factory strap, or a piece customized by a recognized house. When we do, it is stated clearly and priced accordingly.

You will never be sold a modified watch as a factory-original one. If a listing doesn't say aftermarket, the watch is factory as delivered.

09Do your watches come with box and papers?+

Some do, some don't, and we state exactly which before you buy, including booklets, tags, extra links, and accessories.

Box and papers add value and desirability, so a full set is priced as a full set and a watch-only piece is priced as a watch-only piece. No guessing either way.

10Is a watch without papers worth buying?+

Often, yes. Papers get lost in moves, in estates, and by owners who didn't know they mattered, it's extremely common on watches more than ten years old, and it says nothing about whether the watch is genuine.

The right move is to make sure it's discounted appropriately versus the same reference with a full set. We price that difference honestly, and the authenticity guarantee is identical either way.

Payment

How money moves, and how we keep it safe.

01What payment methods do you accept?+

Bank wire transfer. It is how essentially every transaction settles, and for a watch at this value it is the cleanest and safest route for both sides.

If wire genuinely does not work for you, ask, other arrangements are considered case by case and confirmed in writing before anything moves. We will tell you up front if we can't accommodate something rather than string you along.

02How do I protect myself from wire fraud?+

Take this seriously, wire fraud is the single biggest risk in this industry, and it isn't unique to us. Criminals intercept email threads and send convincing fake wire instructions at the last moment.

Always call us at a number you have independently verified and confirm wire details by voice before sending funds. We will never send you new or changed wire instructions by email without confirming them with you by phone. If you ever receive instructions that look even slightly off, stop and call (360) 852-2182.

03When does my watch ship after I pay?+

Once payment has fully cleared and the order is confirmed, watches typically ship the same or next business day, fully insured overnight.

We don't ship on weekends or holidays, a package worth this much shouldn't sit in a courier facility over a weekend. You'll get tracking the moment the label is created.

04Do you take deposits to hold or source a watch?+

Yes. A deposit is the normal way to secure a watch you've committed to, or to have us go get a specific piece from the network.

Deposit terms are agreed in writing first, the amount, what it applies to, and what happens if the deal doesn't proceed. Nothing is ambiguous and nothing is buried.

05Do you offer financing or payment plans?+

We don't run in-house financing. If you're working with your own lender or a third-party financing provider, that's your call and we're happy to provide whatever documentation they need.

Ask us before you arrange anything and we'll tell you plainly what we can and can't accommodate.

06Will I be charged sales tax?+

Montana has no statewide general sales tax. Whether any tax applies to your specific purchase depends on where you are and how the watch is delivered.

We'll tell you exactly what, if anything, will be added before you commit to a number, no surprise line items after the fact. If you have a specific tax question about your own state, your accountant is the right person to ask.

07Is my personal information safe with you?+

Yes. We collect only what a transaction requires, we don't sell or share your information, and we don't keep client lists we have no use for.

Discretion matters in this business, for your security as much as your privacy. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.

Shipping and Delivery

Fully insured, overnight, signature required. No exceptions.

01How do you ship?+

Every watch leaves us by FedEx Overnight, fully insured for the full purchase price, with adult signature required on delivery.

We do not ship watches uninsured and we do not ship without signature confirmation. That applies to every watch at every price point, with no exceptions.

02Who pays for shipping and insurance?+

Shipping and full insurance are handled as part of the transaction and confirmed with you before purchase, so there's no surprise charge at the end.

We don't treat insurance as an upsell. A watch of this value goes out fully covered or it doesn't go out.

03Do I have to sign for the package?+

Yes, adult signature is required, and it's non-negotiable. Have the package sent somewhere a person will actually be, or arrange a courier hold for pickup.

Never authorize the courier to leave it unattended. Doing so voids the insurance and moves all of the risk onto you, which is exactly the situation we're trying to keep you out of.

04Can I have it shipped to my office or held for pickup?+

Yes, and for many clients a courier hold-for-pickup is the most secure option, the package never sits on a porch and you collect it with your ID.

Tell us what works for your schedule and we'll set the shipment up that way.

05Is the packaging discreet?+

Completely. Nothing on the outside of the box identifies the contents, the brand, or the value of what's inside.

Nobody handling your package along the way has any reason to think it's anything other than ordinary.

06What if the package is lost or damaged?+

Risk of loss stays with us until the package is signed for. If an insured shipment in our control is lost or damaged in transit, we handle the claim and we make you whole.

Inspect the box before you sign. If it shows any sign of tampering or damage, note it with the courier at the time of delivery and call us immediately, that documentation protects you.

07How long will delivery take?+

Overnight once it's shipped. The variable is when payment clears, not the transit time.

You'll have tracking as soon as the label exists, and we'll tell you the expected delivery day rather than leaving you refreshing a tracking page.

08Do you ship internationally?+

It's considered case by case, and depends on the destination country's customs requirements, duties, and our insurance limits.

Ask before you plan a purchase from outside the US. If we can't get a watch to you safely and fully insured, we'll tell you rather than gamble with it.

Returns and Refunds

What happens if it isn't right.

01What is your return policy?+

Returns are accepted only when a watch is not as described. You have 48 hours (two calendar days) from delivery to inspect the watch, and if it isn't as described, contact us within that window and we'll arrange the return and a full refund. We don't offer change-of-mind returns, every watch is photographed individually and described in detail before you commit, so what arrives is exactly what you saw.

Inspect it the day it lands and photograph it before you wear it. The full terms are on the Returns and Refunds page, nothing there will contradict what we told you on the phone.

02What condition does the watch need to be in to return it?+

The same condition it shipped in, unworn beyond trying it on, unaltered, and returned with all original packaging, papers, tags, links, and accessories that came with it.

Watches that have been worn, damaged, engraved, serviced, or sized without the removed links returned aren't eligible. This is standard across the industry and it protects the next buyer as much as it protects us.

03How do I start a return?+

Call or text before you do anything else, don't ship a watch back unannounced. We'll confirm the return, send a fully insured label or specific instructions, and give you the correct return address.

A watch sent back without authorization or without adequate insurance travels at your risk, and we don't want you in that position.

04Who pays return shipping?+

If the watch isn't as described, or anything went wrong on our end, we cover return shipping in full and fully insured. That one's on us, without argument.

Since returns only happen when something isn't as described, return shipping is never your cost.

05How long do refunds take?+

Once the watch is back with us and confirmed to be in the condition it was sent, refunds are issued promptly, typically within three business days.

Refunds go back by the same method you paid where possible: wires by wire, checks by check. Third-party bank or wire fees aren't something we're able to refund.

06Are sourced or special-order watches returnable?+

No. Watches sourced to your specific request and special orders are final sale, because we've gone and bought that piece specifically for you.

This is confirmed in writing before you commit. We never bury it in fine print or spring it on you afterward. The Authenticity Guarantee still applies in full and never expires.

07What if I find an authenticity problem after the return window closes?+

The return window doesn't apply to authenticity, that's handled separately and far more generously. The Authenticity Guarantee has no expiration date.

If a watch you bought from us is ever found not to be authentic as represented, you get a full refund, whether that's three days later or three years later.

Selling, Trading and Consigning

Getting a fair number for the watch you already own.

01How do I sell my watch to you?+

Send photos and the details, brand, model, reference, approximate year, condition, and whether you have box and papers. Text is fastest: (360) 852-2182. Or use the Sell or Trade form.

We'll research it and come back with a real number. No obligation to accept, and no pressure if you decide to hold onto it.

02How do you decide what to offer?+

We look at actual recent sales for that reference in that condition, with and without a full set, and work from there. Then we tell you how we got to the number.

Lowballing someone and hoping they don't check is a one-transaction strategy. We'd rather make less and have you call us again in two years.

03How fast do I get paid?+

Same day, once the watch arrives and is verified. No holding periods, no waiting on a consignment to move.

Payment method is agreed with you in advance so the money goes where you expect, when you expect it.

04How do I ship my watch to you safely?+

Don't ship until you've spoken to us. We provide a prepaid, fully insured overnight label, we can't insure or take responsibility for a package we didn't arrange.

Pack it securely, include everything that was discussed, and keep your drop-off receipt. Then it's covered end to end.

05What if my watch isn't quite as I described it?+

It happens, usually innocently, an owner doesn't know a watch was polished or that a clasp was replaced. If the watch differs materially from the description, we'll call you with revised terms.

You can accept the revised offer or have the watch shipped back to you fully insured at no cost. You're never trapped once your watch is in our hands.

06Will you buy a watch without box and papers?+

Yes. Full sets bring more, but we regularly buy and sell watch-only pieces, and we'll tell you exactly what the missing papers are costing you.

Don't let a missing box stop you from asking.

07Can I trade my watch toward another one?+

Absolutely, and it's often the cleanest path, you skip the hassle of selling privately and put the value straight into the next piece.

We'll give you a trade figure and a purchase price separately so you can see both numbers clearly, instead of one blended number that hides the math.

08Do you take watches on consignment?+

Yes, for the right pieces. Consignment can bring more than an outright sale if you're not in a hurry, and we'll be honest about whether your watch is a good candidate.

Terms, timeline, and the split are agreed in writing before we take possession. You'll always know where your watch is and what it's listed at.

Sourcing a Specific Watch

If you can name it, we can usually find it.

01Can you find a watch that isn't shown on your site?+

That's a large part of what we do. We're not limited to what's in a case, we work a network of trusted dealers, private collectors, and enthusiasts across the country.

Tell us the reference, dial, year, condition, and budget, and we'll go looking. Start on the Source a Watch page or just text us.

02How long does sourcing take?+

Usually within 24 hours for current and readily available references. Genuinely rare pieces take longer, and we'll give you a realistic timeline rather than an optimistic one.

You'll hear from us either way, including when the honest answer is that nothing good is available at your number right now.

03Is there a fee or any obligation to have you look?+

No fee to look, and no obligation. You'll get photos, a condition report, and a transparent price, and you're free to pass.

We'd rather you walk away from a watch that isn't right than talk you into one that is merely available.

04Can you find discontinued or vintage references?+

Yes, and it's some of the most satisfying work we do. Discontinued and vintage pieces are exactly where an independent dealer beats an authorized one, there's no waitlist for a watch that hasn't been made in twenty years.

Vintage takes patience and careful vetting. We'd rather take an extra few weeks than hand you a watch with a redialed face.

05Can you get me a brand-new, current-production watch?+

Often, yes, and without a purchase history, a waitlist, or being told to buy jewelry first.

Tell us the reference and we'll tell you honestly what it takes to get one and what it costs today.

Warranty, Service and Care

What's covered, by whom, and for how long.

01Does the manufacturer's warranty transfer to me?+

Where a watch still has time remaining on its manufacturer warranty and comes with its card, that coverage generally follows the watch rather than the original owner.

Any manufacturer warranty is provided by the manufacturer under its own terms, we're an independent dealer and can't administer or extend it. We'll tell you exactly what documentation your watch comes with so you know where you stand.

02Do you provide your own warranty?+

What we provide is the Authenticity Guarantee, which never expires, and an honest condition disclosure before you buy.

If something isn't as we represented it, that's ours to fix and we'll fix it. Ask us before purchase and we'll be specific about the piece in front of you.

03Has the watch been serviced?+

We tell you what we know about service history, and we're clear about the difference between what's documented and what's likely.

If a watch isn't running within specification, that gets disclosed and reflected in the price. You won't get a surprise service bill because we glossed over something.

04Do you service or repair watches?+

No, we're a dealer, not a service center. We don't take in repairs, replace crystals, change batteries, or service movements, and we don't handle warranty work.

If your watch needs work, an authorized service center for the brand or a reputable independent watchmaker is the right call. Happy to point you in a sensible direction if you're stuck, just ask.

What we do do is buy watches in any condition, including non-running ones. If a repair quote has come back higher than you expected, it may be worth getting a number from us before you spend it.

05Can you size the bracelet before it ships?+

Yes, tell us your wrist measurement and we'll size it before it goes out, and every removed link ships with the watch.

If your wrist needs links beyond what came with the watch, we'll find out what they cost and quote you before ordering anything.

06Is the watch water resistant?+

Treat any pre-owned watch as untested for water resistance unless we specifically tell you it has been pressure tested. Gaskets age regardless of how the watch looks.

If water resistance matters for how you'll wear it, tell us and we'll address it before the watch ships rather than after.

07Who do I call if something goes wrong later?+

The same number you called in the first place, (360) 852-2182, and the same person answers.

There's no support queue and no ticket number. Clients from three years ago still text directly, and that's how we like it.

About Big Sky Timepieces

Who you're dealing with.

01Who am I actually dealing with?+

Ryan, the owner. From the first message to the day the watch arrives, and after.

You won't be handed to a sales rep, and you won't get a different story from a different person halfway through.

02You don't have a storefront. How do I know you're a real business?+

Ask, and then verify, don't take our word for it. Big Sky Timepieces LLC is a registered limited liability company operating in Montana. Our Google Business Profile carries real reviews from real buyers you can read and cross-check. Our dealer profile on Chrono24 is public. Every watch we've placed is photographed and documented on the Sold Watches page, and the same activity is public on Instagram. We also hold a vetted, paid membership in a private dealer group that screens dealers before admitting them.

As for the storefront: almost nobody at this end of the market runs one anymore. A retail floor means display cases, staff and rent, and every dollar of it gets priced into the watch you buy. We meet locally by appointment instead, and ship the rest fully insured overnight. What replaces the storefront is everything above, a written Authenticity Guarantee, a plain-English Returns policy, and a phone number that reaches the owner.

If you'd like to speak with someone who has already bought from us before you send money, say so and we'll arrange it.

03Where are you located?+

Whitefish, Montana. We meet local clients and visitors by appointment, and we serve collectors nationwide.

The overwhelming majority of our business ships fully insured overnight anywhere in the United States, so location is no obstacle.

04Why buy from an independent dealer instead of an authorized dealer?+

No waitlists, no purchase-history games, and no being told what you have to buy first. Independents also reach discontinued and collectible references an authorized dealer simply can't sell you.

You also get a straight answer about the market instead of a script, including when the honest answer is to wait.

05Can I see reviews or references?+

Yes. Every review we've received is on our Reviews page, you can verify them on Google, and our track record is on the Sold Watches page.

If you'd like to speak with a past client before buying, ask. We'll arrange it.

06Where do new arrivals get posted first?+

Instagram, @big_sky_timepieces. Pieces regularly sell from a story before they ever reach this site.

Following is the single best way to get first look. If there's a specific reference you want, tell us and we'll contact you directly when one lands.

07What if my question isn't answered here?+

Ask it. Call or text (360) 852-2182, email ryan@bigskytimepieces.com, or use the contact form.

No question is too basic, and asking a lot of them before spending this kind of money is exactly what a smart buyer does.

No answers matched that.

Try a shorter word, or just ask us. You'll be talking to the owner, and no question is too basic.
